Through sites like youtube unknown artist can show off their skills. Youtube is a site where you can load videos of yourself. This is a great idea for not only the aspiring artist but also for the A&R’s at record labels. No longer do they have to go out and look high and low to find talented acts. They can log on to youtube and find whatever they’re looking for.
Dondria “phatfffat” Fields has over 190 videos on youtube. By creating this account on youtube and uploading videos of herself she was able to create a huge following. Using youtube she was able to showcase her love and talent for music. Her talent was undoubtably something to talk about. The buzz on her was not only coming everyday viewers but caught the attention of established music exces. Producer Jermaine Dupri discovered Dondria through her youtube buzz in 2007. When he first contacted Dondria she didn’t respond back to him, not believing it was real. Jermaine Dupri made several attempts assuring her it was indeed true. Once she was reassured that it was him her dreams came true and he signed her to his record label SoSo Def soon after.
Dondria had her first appearance on a song titled “Like This” by Bow Wow. She also released a mix tape to gain an even bigger fan base to get people excited about her debut album. Her debut album “Dondria vs. phatfffat” came out this year 2010. Her first single “You’re the One” which made it to the Billboard #100 and peaked at #14. That is a great accomplishment for someone who was discovered on a public Internet site.
